The first marked grave is dated 1880; however, there are at least 20 graves marked only with field stones. No names nor dates are visible. Along with four grandbabies of J. B. Arrington in a row, there is also a marker to J. E. Arrington's arm. It was amputated in 1897 in an effort to stop the growth of cancer, but the effort failed. Mr. Arrington was buried only two months later.
Driving directions to the Friendship Cemetery are as follows: From the intersection of Morgan Street and W. Pearl St. drive west on Hwy 377 for 4.5 miles. There is a cemetery sign on the highway; watch for that and turn right on an unmarked county road beside a blue metal warehouse. Drive .1 mile on pavement then watch for a dirt lane to the right just as you approach the yard of the house in front of the drive. Turn on the lane and the cemetery is .1 mile farther. It is surrounded with a nice metal fence and is well maintained. The little school house ceased to be used in the late 1940's. It sat to the northeast of the cemetery, but it is nothing more than an old foundation and a bit of rubble now. The windmill sits all alone now with no duties to perform.
We completed this survey one sunny afternoon in early January, 1989.
