I'm trying to do some research for an article I am writing. I know that the grave marker for Jesse W. James was placed in 1984 in the cemtery. Was there any marker in place before that or are there any pictures that exist that show the marker? My maternal Grandmother(Maybelle Herring) was born in Vaden, Mississippi (1878?). Among other things she told me that her grandfather and four other Herring brothers emigrated from Ireland (1840's), she was told they had been fishermen in Ireland, hence the name Herring from the primary fish they caught. She said her Grandfather and one other brother settled in Mississippi and that at least two others "went to Texas" to make their fortunes. She recounted a visit from the "Cowboys" from Texas when she was a young girl. She said they were complete with Stetsons, chaps annd single action Colts. Any general knowledge out there that might help me tie this together would be appreciated.

I am researching two families with Hood County connections. The first is Harold James and Celia Arlena WALDEN BEAVER. This family originates out of Carroll County, Arkansas but moved to Texas sometime around 1940. I am primarily interested in where they are burried (he died in 1984 and she in 1988) and the when, where and why's of their move to Texas. The second family is John James and Hattie Lee WARREN BAKER. He was born 1869 in Ben Hill, Georgia but I do not know if that is Ben Hill County or Ben Hill, Fulton County, Georgia. He married Hattie in 1899 in Johnson County, Texas and they had seven children that I am aware of (Melvin; Reuben; Dennis; John; Lewis; Harry and Hattie). He died in 1960 and she in 1967. I would like to know where they are burried and who the children married. Copies of obits would be appreciated if anyone has them (email is fine, I don't need hard copies). I am happy to share what I have about the family with anyone who is interested. Thanks for checking.

I am seeking information on Suvilla Johnson. She was born at Hobbs Depot, Oklahoma on August 3rd, 1880. Suvilla was from the Western Cherokee Tribe. She married Samuel Neville.They had two or three children, two of whom were Owen Stevens Neville and Ivan Neville. Her grandson, Little John Neville, is trying to trace his indian heritage so that his children will be eligible for the benefits available for Native Americans through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. I am seeking any genealogical information regarding Tom Findley, Laura (Clark) Findley, William Wesley Findley, and Frances "Fannie" Irene (Tidwell) Findley of Hood County and the surrounding area. Both Tom Findley and Laura (Clark) Findley were born in the early 1840s. Together, they had a son, William Wesley Findley, who was born on March 9, 1877, in Somervell County. William married Frances "Fannie" Irene Tidwell on November 24, 1908, in Somervell County. Frances "Fannie" Irene (Tidwell) Findley died in the early 1920s, in the surrounding area. Since there is no death record or burial information for her, I have not been able to locate her final resting place. (Her parents were Daniel and Sara Tidwell.) I also would like to locate Tom Findley's and Laura (Clark) Findley's final resting place. Any assistance would be most appreciated!!!

I sent an email to a John J. Lockett at an email address that was returned. A Virginia Hale had responded to his email May 5, 2000. Do you have any further information on him? Turns out he's my 3rd cousin and I'd like to contact him regarding his great-grandfather, Thomas Lockett, and his wife, Amanda, who is my great-grandaunt. I was in Granbury yesterday and visited the county clerk's office, the Depot, where I got a copy of the email mentioned above, the library where I saw the Davis file on Thomas plus the 1900 census on his family. I'll appreciate what you can share. I'm actually trying to find the gravesite of Amanda (Montgomery) Lockett's father, a Dr. Hiram M. Montgomery, Confederate veteran. He died April 29, 1900, probably in Brown Co., TX, but could have spent his last days with daughter Amanda in Hood County. No record of him was found there, yesterday. Thank you. I recently heard from a family member that an article or story was printed on a Hood County Web site and that this story mentions my ggg grandfather Alsey Scriven HIGH. The story states that he lived and possiblely worked as a lawman in Hood County. Alsey HIGH was b. 1, Dec, 1928, married Winnie Elizabeth GAMMEL and d. 4, June, 1894. Alsey and Winnie had 13 children and I have been trying to piece together information on each child but have run into a brick wall. I would dearly love to read this story as this is all new material to me. THOMAS (JEFFERSON?) GRANT - There is very little known about the Grant family prior to Great Grandfather, James Davis Grant. The earliest history indicates that his father was Thomas Jefferson Grant, who may have been born in Tennessee around 1777. He was believed to have died in Marshall County (prior to 1836, was known as Maury County), Tennessee in January 1839. The only accounts of his life found thus far come from the Marshall County - County Minutes. On January 7, 1841, the Coroner presented a bill to the county in the amount of $5.00 for summoning a Jury of Inquest over the dead body of Thomas Grant. Two days later, a Security Bond for $800 was presented to the county by one of his sons, Richard G. Grant, and Willian P. Boatright in regards to the Estate of Thomas Grant. Then, on February 4, an Inventory of the Estate was presented to the county by Early T. Reasonover, Administator of the Estate. On March 1, a settlement was made by Gideon Black, John Elliot and E. Campbell with Mr. Reasonover. However, on March 4, the court ordered a correction of error in settling the estate of Thomas Grant. Finally, on April 5, 1841, the court accepted the settlement with Msrs. Black, Elliott and Campbell with Mr. Reasonover. Thomas married Sarah (Davis?) nee Glover in Marshall County. They had nine children, all born between 1800 and 1825-- including John b. abt. 1805; Richard G b. 2-22-08; Howard b. abt. 1810; a daughter (may have died at childbirth); Mary Margaret b. abt. 1815; Levina b. abt. 1814; James (JD) Davis, b. 1-6-18; Nancy E. b. abt. 1822; and Elizabeth b. abt. 1823. Thomas' father was said to have been born in Scotland, and his mother was believed to have been born in Northern Ireland. Sarah was also believed to have born in Northern Ireland in 1784 . She died in Robertson County, Texas on January 7, 1860, and was buried in the Owenville Cemetary just outside of Franklin, TX. Beyond these facts and presumptions, there appears to be little, if any, other historical information. Any help or possible leads would be appreciated.

FARMER - I am trying to locate information on my grandmother's parents. Her name was Roberta (Farmer) Powell. She was born September 24, 1880. She died in Sweetwater, Texas around 1965. My grandmother is shown in the 1896 Amulet School picture as "Berta Farmer." There is a boy in the 1899 picture listed as "Okla Farmer." Does anyone know if this is her brother. I am trying to locate information regarding the origins or parentage of Thomas Monroe Nichols. Thomas married at Liano, Hood Co in 1870 to Mary Fletcher Gee, niece of Charles Pinckney Gee of Johnson Co. and grandaughter to Samuel P. Gee. They resided in Texas, I believe in the Granbury area where they had several children.
It is known that Thomas had a brother William and a sister Mahalia who married a Cowan. My efforts to associate Thomas with a family have proved futile. The 1900 census of Oklahoma, where he died in 1901, indicate he was born in Tennessee in 1850, although family tradition has put his childhood home in Mississippi. It is said that he fled Mississippi during the war as a child, the Union troops having invaded his home bringing terror and destruction.
Any help in locating a Nichols family in Hood or a neighboring county would be most appreciated. I reviewed the 1870 census for Hood to no avail and am at a loss where to turn.

Searching for info about the burial place of my g-grandfather James Buck. Family story says he died about 1891, presumably in Missouri because that is the same year his youngest child was born. The 1900 Census list wife Ella and their 4-children living in Denison, TX. James wasn't listed. It mystifies me as to how this woman with 4-children traveled to Denison - alone or with a wagon train. Looking for information about Sam Martin, born in Texas in June 1855. He was married to Martha Runnels (b. May 1852). Their children included Charles Isaac Martin (b. Granbury, Hood County, 1 Oct 1877); Sarrah Martin (b. May 1884); Eupheny Martin (b. March 1887); and Marry Martin (b. Sep 1889). Sam and Martha appear with these children in the 1900 Somervell County Census as well as in the 1910 Hill County Census. Both of these census records show Sam Martin's parents to be of Illinois origin. To date, I have been unable to locate any reference to them in the 1880 Census.

I am looking for information on a Thomas FAUCET. He was listed in the 1870 census for hood county with wife Mary and children.The census says he was born in Georgia and was 56 years old. I have a Bible record with a birthdate of Jan 29, 1814 for a Thomas FAUCET who lived in Georgia. His age would have been consistant with my Bible record. I beleive that the Thomas FAUCET in Hood is the same as the Thomas in my Bible record. I am looking for some type of proof that this is the Thomas Faucet in my Bible. My Thomas Faucets father was a George Faucet who came from North Carolina and was married in Georgia in 1800. Thomas had 3 brothers. I think Thomas and 2 of his brothers moved to Mississippi and then from there Thomas came to Hood Texas. Thomas was a Black Smith and so was his father George Faucet. I have more information if some one is interested. I can also send copies of the Bible record if needed or wanted. With them was their son Albert Tidwell and his wife Martha (Mattie). Albert had two sons in Kentucky and three more children after moving to Hood County. Albert was a farmer. In 1889, he retired and moved to Tolar and operated a livery stable with his son Lonnie Lee Tidwell. Lonnie Lee Tidwell married Anna May Sheppard in 1905. He stopped working at the livery stable and went to work on his own farm four miles southwest of Tolar, Texas. Four children were born through the years. She & James Thomas, & 2 young children decided to travel ( by wagon ) to Electra, Wichita Co., TX. where several of Grandpa's siblings had traveled to look for work. They had received letters telling how good the economy was there. Grandpa J.T. BRYANT was not feeling well & she was pregnant with there 3rd child. Somewhere along the way he became very ill and so they side- tracked to his mothers home near Granbury where he soon died. Grandmother Edna Butler Bryant had by that time remarried a William BUTLER. ( If there was any relationship we have not yet found it. ) At. any rate, after James Thomas' death, Buelah and family moved on to Electra, she remarried, & raised her son & daughters there. I would love to correspond with anyone who might be able to add to this family. I have read Judge Davis' notes there. They are priceless & so are you folks there. Also, several of the older children of William J. ended up in West Texas, Colo., & New Mexico later on it is believed. George Richard " Dick" BRYANT stayed in or around Granbury for several years but I believe he moved on in later years & gave Judge Davis much of his information. Hope this is helpful. WIilliam J. BRYANT supposily bragged he had 20 kids altogether ( 10 by each wife). I have not found quite that many but it is possible I supposed that some could have been lost as infants. Looking for Wm. WINDSOR, David Perry: My grandfather is recorded on the tax rolls of Hood County in 1881 and 1882. In 1881 he and his brother, Stephen Decatur, are recorded as joint owners of 160 acres. My grandmother was Lucinda Julia Adelaid Walker. They married 8/10/1881 in Waldrop, TX. Two children were born in Grandbury, Hood County, Exsia Almira born 7/22/1882, and Cornelia Decy born 11/24/1884. I've been trying to find out information about my grandmother, Cora Emma Jean Young, whose mother was a daughter of Pleasant THORP. She was born in Thorp Springs in 1887, the youngest of seven children. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father was apparently so upset that he left for Calfornia or Alaska. She went to live with her brother, Henry Young in Wichita Falls. Later she went to California, married my grandfather(William Corridan)and returned to Thorpe Springs on several visits (the latest about 1923). If anyone has more information, I would appreciate it. I have found the family in Bridgeport 1900 census, 1910 on the Brown Co. census and on the 1920 Wise Co. census. A woman, Ann Anston was living with them. I am trying to find where Mattie B. I am interested in the Hugh M. SWIFT found in Hood Co., Texas, tax records between 1877 and 1939. The records also mention an L. B. SWIFT. A Hugh M. SWIFT married Rachel EVANS in Bates Co., MO, in 1878, and an L.B. SWIFT married J. N. GRENWELL in Jasper Co. MO, in 1873. Are these the same Hugh M. and L. B. SWIFT in Hood Co. TX? I am a descendant of Hugh SWIFT, born in about 1814 in Kentucky, and migrated to Dallas County, Missouri, in the late 1830s. Family lore is that he went to Texas in the 1870s. Any help with these folks would be greatly appreciated. Will share info.

I am seeking information on my mother's family. My great grandfather was Benjamin Franklin NELSON. He married my great grandmother, Phobie DEMPSEY Nelson, I think, in Franklin County, Ala. He along with his two brothers, George and James left Alabama sometime before 1885. My grandfather, John M., was born in Mississippi in 1885. About six years later, 1891 or 1892, the family moved to Texas. Ben Franklin settled in or around Klondyke, TX; James or George settled in Granbury, TX; and the other settled, I believe, in or around Cleveland, TX.

Garland Cross married my Grandmother and later divorced. But I would like to know more about him and I was led here. I believe Garland cross lived at 76048 Granbury,Hood, Texas. He was born Dec.8 1908 and died Jan. 1981. His SS# is 525-32-2655. As far as I know this may be fathers stepdad. It would mean alot to know mor about him. He married my Grandmother in Marfa, Texas and had lived in Presidio, Texas. They married July 28, 1943. This is all i know. But he played a part in my Dad's life and i want to know what happened to him after he left or divorced. Did he marry again? Is this the man who i am searching for. Did he have children? Did he die alone? Where is he buried? I hope you don't mind all the questions but they are part of what makes my family whole. Any information about James Oliver FREEMAN and/or his wife Sofronia Jane HALEY or HALLEY . James was born in Texas about 1854 (County not known) and is buried in Rock Church Cemetary. Sofronia was born in Coryell County about 1861 and is also buried at Rock Church. I do not know when or where they were married. I am looking for info on Edwin Blackburn DAVIDSON b. Jan.29, 1820 in TN, d. May 14, 1893 Hood Co. He and wife Sarah Harker Hastings left Benton Co., AR after 1850 and show in the 1870 Hood Co. census with children John, William, Matta, and Harve Blackburn. Edwin became a doctor and is listed as "Dock" Davidson in the 1870 census. They had lost 4 previous children, 3 in 1848 and 1 in 1856. Does anybody know where this family might have been during 1850-1870? I have completely lost track of "Dock" and his father John Edwin Davidson after 1854 in Benton Co. AR.

Looking for information about first husband of Frances ASTON (b. 25 Mar 1884, Hood Co) who lived with her parents in Hood Co until they died in late 1890's. She then moved to Santo (Palo Pinto)and lived with her sister (Belle ASTON and her husband TT GRIFFIN) and married a Tom Bradford on 19 Jan 1900 when she was 16 years old. I have some update information about Loveless Savage Ginn II, second ownere of Comanche Peak, Hood Co. He was a son of Thomas Madison Ginn III and Mary Elizabeth Parsons , and married Flora Isabelle Slaughter September 12, 1897 in Hood Co. To them were born 4 children ( Thelma Irene, Victor L.,Leta Bell, and William Thomas. Loveless was born October 17, 1877, and died November 6, 1944. He and his wife are buried at the Granbury Cemetery in Granbury TX. Their youngest child , Thomas Madison, died when less than 2 years old of locked bowells. He is buried by his parents. Thelma Irene married Williard Bently Aubrey, Victor L. married Inda L. ? , Leta Bell married Don Cherry I have one child listed for Thelma Irene and it is Marious ( not sure of the spelling ) no dates. I also have a Thomas Leroy Ginn who married Mattie L. Gideon. They are buried at the Lower Fall Creek Cemetery near Granbury, Hood Co. The funeral records of WILLIAM BUCHANAN DANIEL who died Dec. 31, 1940 states that his father was R. C. MCDANIEL; his mother MARTHA DAWSON, both from TN.
