John Harrison Baker was born in the Baker Community of Parker County, Texas, October 26, 1863. He married Adalura Octavia Lovelace December 3, 1885. Three daughters and seven sons were born to this union, all living to adulthood. The family moved to Hood County in 1893.

Both Mr. Baker and his wife had been brought up as Presbyterians, but about 1904 they united with the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and were baptized by the pastor, L.Y. Brown. Some time later Mr. Baker was ordained as a deacon by the Mt. Pleasant Church. He was elected Moderator of Paluxy Association in 1915 and presided over three annual sessions. He died in 1944.
