Sons of Confederate Veterans members and Civil War reenactors were among those present at a Confederate marker dedication Saturday in honor of Corporal Reuben Ferguson Jones, CSA. The ceremony was held at the Granbury Cemetery. |
A cool, light drizzle didn't deter close to 50 people from paying homage to
Rueben Ferguson Jones, a corporal in the Confederate States Army, during a marker dedication Saturday at Granbury Cemetery. The ceremony was sponsored by the Gen. H.B. Granbury 683 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and the Albert Sidney Johnston 2060, UDC.
Reuben Ferguson Jones was just 19 years old when he enlisted with the
"Newton Rifles" and became part of the 13th Mississippi Infantry Regiment
during the War Between the States. Jones was captured during the Battle of
Gettysburg. He remained a prisoner of war in Fort Delaware until the war's
end in 1865.
Jones and his wife later moved to Hood County and Reuben died at age 41 in 1884.

Several of Jones' descendants took part in the ceremony. Preston Furlow of Tolar, presented a hand-sewn replica flag of the 13th Mississippi Infantry to Doris Froehmer, Jones' great-granddaughter. |
